Hair: Social views

To understand the how and why of peoples perceptions of hair I did some research on the how hair has been looked at socially thru the ages…

Punishment
In different cultures and societies cutting or shaving someone’s hair has been used as punishment and demoralisation. Like in during the Second World War, the Nazi’s would shave the heads of the prisoners of the concentration camps. To show then that they had no power and to destroy they’re moral.

Equality
Sometimes shaving heads is used as a tool for equality in the military.

No ego
Buddhist monks shave their heads to let all sence of ego go.

Pride
In the USA African American citizens used to wear their hair in an afro as a symbol of racial pride.

Sexual freedom
In de 1920s women known as ‘flappers’ cut their traditional long hair as an symbol of their independence and sexual freedom.

Wealth Regular going to the hairdresser is considered as a sign of wealth in some cultures

They shall not make baldness upon their head Letting your hair grow long is a must in some regions, they belief that you are not suppose to cut, crop or alter your hair.

Distancing In the 1960s ‘Hippies’ grew their hair long to distance themselves from mainstream society.

Morning Shaving the head or cutting hair also stands for morning and letting go of the past in certain cultures.

Modesty
In some religions scarves, wigs and other head coverings cover the hair as a sign of modesty.

Hair: Manipulations

How do we change the looks, the feel and the view on hair? A few examples….

Braiding
By braiding hair in such a way you can create structure and shapes.

Styling by accessories Using bands, pins and other hair accessories a style can be put in the hair for conventions or aesthetics.

Styling by products To keep your hair in a style, shape or form you can use gel or spray.

Changing the texture There are different techniques for changing the texture of hair. There are curlers you sleep with or one you have to heat. You can curl it or flat iron it by using heat. For a more permanent result there are special chemicals.

Changing colour The colour of hair can be changed. By using special chemicals and natural product the colour of hair can be changed.

Felting In some cultures the hair is felted to create a style. Using soap or grease and rubbing the hair against each other create this style.

Claying Adding clay on the hair and letting it harden is apart of some cultures.

Removing By cutting hair you can create a style. Long or short sexy or conservative. There are different techniques for doing this. Like shaving with a razor or a trimmer. And there are also different scissors for doing this.

Covering In some cultures people cover their hair for their belief. They wear scarf, wigs or other head coverings.

Treatment
To maintain or get beautiful, full or soft hair their ar different crèmes, shampoo’s and other products. In some countries they use roots moister from plants and other natural product to create this

Hair: Functions

The body is a wonderful thing. Almost everything has a function... the thing is, most of us have lost touch, and I admit, I'm one of them... So what does hair do???

Protection
There are different views on why humans lost almost all there body hair but kept the hair on their heads.

One of them is that it protects the scalp and thus the brain against outside influences, like the sun, the wind and the cold. And in earlier days when people didn’t used to wash their hair it could get creasy enough to protect their heads from the rain.

Sent distributer
Another theory on why we still have our head hair is that it can help spread a person’s personal smell. Hair holds on to a smell longer then skin and this property can help attract the opposite sex.

Expression In most cultures hair is a tool of expression of showing your faith, beliefs or status. In western society hair can even be a tool of showing how you feel. Having a modest, sexy or extreme hairstyle can tell something about your social group, your beliefs, the way you feel about your self and even about you profession.

Hair: some facts

The hair on our head grows the fastest in comparison to the hair that grows on the rest of our body’s. Generally head hair on man can grow between 40-50 cm, on woman it can grow up to 70-80 cm. Head hair doesn’t grow endlessly, this has to do with the hair cycle witch differs for every hair from 2-7 years. Every hair can re-grow about 12 times. Baldness has to do with the cycle of the hair growth. The amount of hair varies per person. But in general blondes have the most hair, up to 140.00, then come people with black hair and brunettes with about 100.000 hairs and red heads generally have the least hear around 85.000. There are different types of hair, thick thin, curly straight and everything in between. It all depends on race, genetics and outside influences like food and conditioning.

Hair: Short introduction

Call me crazy hair speaks to me, I love hair, it possesses great contradictions. Beautiful but nasty, loved and hated, framing the face making it look better or framing the face and making it look worse! Just love it

So what is going? I researched the bra, the history of the bra and everything else that you need or want to know about bra's and breasts. One thing that serprised me a little that this loved peace of clothing hasn't changed much the last decade or so. Yes it's been altered but it didn't realy change. This wouldn't be so weird if the bra as we know it was so enormusly comforteble and functiuonal, but let's confes it's not. It can even be harmfull, knowing that 80% of women don't know their correct bra size, wich can caus all kinds of respetory an skin and body irritation problems, even permanent marks on the body... But things seem to be changing a little, I took a deep dive into the modern day bra, most changes are still just estetics but still,
